Section 7: Bethells to Muriwai Beach
Time: 5-6 hours
Cross Bethells Road from the Lake Wainamu carpark to the start of the Te Henga Walkway. This final section of the Hillary Trail begins with a climb out of Bethells before skirting behind O’Neill Bay and then a steep climb to the top of the high and exposed sea cliffs that border the coast. Wind your way along the cliffs being mindful of the steep drops at all times and enjoy the spectacular views. A long stair climb takes you to Constable Road where you may like to finish.
Otherwise a final 5km awaits you as you follow Constable Road before taking a short detour along the Goldies Bush Walkway to Oaia Road. Follow Oaia Road to Edwin Mitchelson Track, then Lookout Track and Quarry Track as you drop down into Muriwai. The final part of the trail takes in Otakamiro Point and the famous gannet colony before the official Hillary Trail finish at the notice board opposite the café.
