This is a great way to see the popular Hunua Falls from all angles and enjoy the surrounding forest. The track is clearly signposted from the car park near the Falls. It climbs from the Wairoa River below the Falls through beautiful lush forest, along a shady stream to an excellent lookout platform. Pram access: Yes. It is possible to access the lower Hunua Falls lookout, but you'll need to negiotiate a few steps.

What to expect

Walking tracks should be suitable for people with reasonable fitness levels.

Walking tracks will:
  • Have easy to moderate grades with mostly compacted and drained surfaces.
  • Be well sign-posted with directional signs at track entrances and junctions and have safety signs where required.
Walking tracks may:
  • Have steps on excessively steep areas.
  • Have timber boardwalks and bridges over permanent wet areas and waterways.
  • Have seats and maintained views at areas of interest.


Theft from vehicles is not common but unfortunately can happen. You should take the same reasonable precautions you take when parking at other locations and remember to lock your vehicle and take your valuables with you.
