Walking track

The Perimeter Track takes you right around Maungatauhoro through areas rich in Maori history and beautiful forest before descending to Kokoru Bay on the Waiwera estuary. The track is steep, unformed and of tramping track grade only on the descent to Kokoru Bay. Dogs on a leash are allowed on the part of the track that starts at the park entrance gate and leads to the Waiwera estuary. Dogs are not permitted on all other parts of the track. What to expect

Walking tracks should be suitable for people with reasonable fitness levels.

Walking tracks will:
  • Have easy to moderate grades with mostly compacted and drained surfaces.
  • Be well sign-posted with directional signs at track entrances and junctions and have safety signs where required.
Walking tracks may:
  • Have steps on excessively steep areas.
  • Have timber boardwalks and bridges over permanent wet areas and waterways.
  • Have seats and maintained views at areas of interest.


Theft from vehicles is not common but unfortunately can happen. You should take the same reasonable precautions you take when parking at other locations and remember to lock your vehicle and take your valuables with you.
